Julie Kim YWCA GCW blog post

Julie Kim’s GCW reflection

There were few things that I learned from this course. The first concept was to always put your heart in to whatever you are doing. Taking care of kids that were younger than 3 was not an easy job. Some were stubborn, disobedient, and some of them were even rude. On top of that, it was difficult for me to communicate not only cause their speaking ability was poor, but I myself didn’t know much Thai either. Due to all these reasons, during the first few days I had a hard time trying to get the kids open up to me. They were asking for mom and ignored me when I tried to get their attention. However as I kept on trying to get close to the kids, they also started opening up to me as well. Through this coarse I learned to put all your effort in to what you are doing because the result might not come to your straight away, but as time passes, it will slowly come to you.

Another lesson I learned from this course was that your social class might be different but everyone is the same within. I have to say some students in this school comes from higher part of the society. And you could say that some kids from the YWCA day care were in the lower part of the society. I could tell from the shoes that their parents didn’t buy them the best shoes for them, and some of these kids got chicken pox when they could have easily prevent them from vaccination. However when we all got together and played, not only were the kids grinning but the students were having fun with the kids as well. When the students were laughing, the kids were laughing along with them, when the students were dancing, most of the kids were dancing with them and the kids were happy to interact with us. At the end of the YWCA, I leaned that whether you are rich or poor, we all had the same heart.

This experiement was pretty different from what I expected it to be. In the beginning we were expecting the kids to be around 4 to 5 years old. But when they finally arrived to school, they were only 2 or 3. Because of this it was hard during the first day because all the acitivities that we prepared for were for kids that were older. Also since we weren’t expecting the kids to be this young, we didn’t know how to take care of them or handle them. However as we slowly got to take care of the kids, we slowly knew what we were suppose to do and how to act among them. Overall, I really enjoyed this GCW and it made me really happy to see the kids having a fun time with us at school and other places.

Hello my name is Julie talking to you from Thailand’s International School Bangkok and you are listening to today’s vocabulary podcast. For today’s date, today is May 10th of 2012, exactly 10 minutes before the clock strikes 1pm.

(Music)

Let’s get going with what I’m going to talk to you about today. The three words I’ll be focusing on are related to our social studies unit, Israeli conflict. Advocacy, settlement, reneging.

(Music)

The first word is called advocacy. (Sound effect) Spelled A-D-V-O-C-A-C-Y. Some derivatives of advocacy are advocacies, advocate, advocated, and advocating. (Sound effect) This noun word means to show support or to support for something; usually for political reasons. Here’s an example sentence. Obama showed the public of his advocacy of gay marriages. (Pause) This word’s etymology comes from a Medieval Latin word advocare. Meaning summon or call one’s aid. And during the late Middle English, this word was derived in to the common word we now use (dramatic pause) advocacy.

(Music)

The second word to look at is settlement. (Sound Effect) Spelled S-E-T-T-L-E-M-E-N-T. A derivative of this word can be settlements, the plural version of settlement. (Sound Effect) Settlement is a noun word meaning a place where a group of houses are together, like a community. Here’s an example sentence: The Israeli government ordered the army to confiscate Arab land and to build Jewish settlement. (Pause) The word settlement does not have an etymology, so let’s look at the word settle for it’s root meaning. The word settle comes from an old English word called setlan meaning to seat or to place.

(Music)

And now for our last word! Reneging. (Sound effect) Spelled R-E-N-E-G-I-N-G. Some derivatives of this word are renegade, renege and reneged. (Sound effect) This verb word means to go to back to your word or your promise. Here’s an example sentence: When President Obama won his place as the president of the United States; he reneged to what he said he’d do in the election. (Pause) The word reneging comes from a Medieval Latin word called renegare. Re expressing force and negare meaning deny. It was originated during the mid 16th centaury in to the word with now use (pause) reneging.

Let’s get going with what I’m going to talk to you about today. The three words I’ll be focusing on are related to our social studies unit, Israeli conflict. Bias, blockade and extremist.

(Music)

The first word is called bias. (Sound Effect) Spelled B – I – A – S. Biases, biasing and other words are some of its common used derivatives. (Sound effect) This word can be used as a noun or a verb. But for today lets look at the noun meaning. This noun word means to favor a person, thing or an idea more then others. Here’s an example sentence. If a book only tells a story about the good things a person or thing has done, it’s probably a bias. (Pause) The etymology comes from a Greek word called, epikarsios. Meaning oblique. And during the mid 16th century, this word was derived in to the common word we now use (dramatic pause) bias.

(Music)

The second word to look at is blockade. (Sound Effect) Spelled B-L-O-C-K-A-D-E. Some derivatives of blockade can be something like blockades, blockaders, or blockading. (Sound Effect) This word can be used both as a noun or a verb. But for today, lets focus on the n oun definition of blockade. Blockade is a military term used vocab meaning to block a   place from other country form entering or leaving your country. Here’s an example sentence: The country general blockaded the harbor from ships leaving his country due to the bombing that happened near the harbor 5 minutes ago. (Pause) The etymology of this word comes from two different words. Block and ade. And it was originated during the late 17th century.

(Music)

And now for our last word! Extremist. (Sound effect) Spelled E-X-T-R-E-M-I-S-T. A derivative of this word can be extremists, the plural version of extremist. (Sound Effect) This noun word means a person who strongly believes in something and can be a little arrogant. Here’s an example sentence:  It was no use persuading Bob for he was an extremist who strongly believed in Buddhism. (Pause) The word extremist does not h   ave an etymology, so let’s look at the word extreme for it’s root meaning. The word extreme comes from a Latin word, extremus. Meaning outermost and utmost. The word originated during late Middle English in to the word we now use, extreme.

How has this week affected you?

Flooding have affected me a lot. This flood didn’t affect me on hanging out with friends and stuff, but it did affect me on my learning. I haven’t personally witnessed the flood, because when we went by car to check the flood, they blocked the roads so we won’t be able to see. Even though I didn’t get to see the flood with my very own eyes, I still saw it on the TV. I felt very sad because some people lost their home, and a lot of people turned homeless. I hope the Thai government would do something quickly about this situation.
E learning is not working for me at all. E learning does give me more time to work on stuff, but it gives me too much time. I have hard time focusing, and my eyes hurt too much. Sometimes, I can’t access to panthernet, and its hard for me to ask questions, cause it takes time to get my reply  back. Band assignments were effective for e learning because it was easier, cause I could listen to music over and over again.

Summer Reading List

Click the image for further information

During this summer I was able to go through at about 20 books. One of the books was a very fun, fantasy book by Richelle Mead called Vampire Academy. It was about this half vampire girl named Rose protecting Lisa, from the other evil vampires as Lissa’s guardian and also as Lisa’s best friend. A lot of evil vampires try to take Lisa away from Rose. Such as Lisa’s evil uncle Victor who kidnapped Lisa for his own use. Another book I also enjoyed reading was a realistic fiction book called Princess Diaries by Meg Calbot. This book is about this ordinary girl named Mia getting her life all mixed up after she finds out that she is the princess of Genovia. Because of this, she gets in to a lot of difficulty such as friendship problems. Eventually Mia’s life goes on by how Mia struggles out of her problem by one by one. The last book that I really enjoyed was also a fun, fantasy book like the first one, and this one was called Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief by Rick Riordan. In this book, the main character Percy who is the son of Poseidon was blamed for stealing Zeus’s lighting bolt. Later Percy finds out that if he dosen’t bring the lighting bolt to Zeus back in 10 days, the world will be in chaos. With no choice, Percy go out on a mission to find Zeus’s missing lighting bolt with his two friends Grover and Annabeth. Thereupon his adventure with his two friends, begin.

Vampire Academy, Princess Diaries and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief are all very different kinds of books.  This reveals about me that I’m a really unique person. I don’t really like to just read one type of genre, I really like I read all different types of books. This applies to my personality as well. I have all different types and kinds of characters in me. Sometimes I’m really shy, sometimes I’m really loud and sometimes I’m really quiet! You might be wondering, ‘Can she really have all these different kinds of personalities?’.Well, I don’t really know how but I have such a big variety of personalities that I don’t even realize I have it. Then again, because of my unique nature, I really don’t like sticking with one idea. Rather then doing just one thing, I like to do all different kinds of things. So I guess this concludes that I don’t have a particular personality. I’m just a unique Julie with all different kinds characters.
